Principal’s Message Vol.61 – Jan 2016

Dear Island CA Community, 您好.
I hope you have managed to keep warm and safe over the last few days. I have learned that Hong Kong is not set up for these weather conditions as compared with our home countries — hence my surprise at the announcement from the Education Bureau on Sunday night. The classroom air conditioners at school do not give out heat, so the school did feel very cold to those of us who were here at school on Monday.

I have news to share from Generations Christian Education (who manage IslandCA) finance department. The good news is that the Capital Levy for the next school year will remain the same. The tuition fee (subject to EDB approval) will increase by 4.7% (compared with 6% last year), so the school fees will be 10,600 per month x 10 for the school year. We are in the process of hiring more staff, and the tuition fee increase is required to maintain a fair level of compensation in order to attract and maintain the best possible available teaching and learning staff.

We look forward to seeing you at the student led conferences tomorrow (Friday). We ask you to please fill out a sheet that will be given to you at the conference, recording answers to two major questions:
(1) What has your child learned? This can include academic, physical, spiritual, social /emotional learning.
Please talk with your child about what has been learned, rather than what he / she has done. You may also use the written report to help you.
(2) What can you do to support your child’s learning? Extend their interest in learning and base things you do around their interests. This could include, for example, reading with your child (they can read to you and vice versa. Do real world Maths, for example, measuring when baking, calculating when shopping.

We hope to see many of you at the Island Christian Academy Chinese New Year Fair next Friday. Chinese culture is part of the Chinese Studies curriculum, and over the last couple of weeks this has been a major focus of student learning and their presentation of it. You will see the result of this at the concerts.

This will be the last letter until after the Chinese New Year break. May God give you good health, peace, guidance, refreshment and blessing over this period and the rest of the year. Enjoy the festivities with family and friends!

Debbie Middleton, Principal
