Principal’s Message Vol.52 – Aug 2015

A big welcome to Island Christian Academy for the new school year!

Welcome to all our new families; we trust that you are making new friends, meeting old ones and navigating your way successfully through the daunting task of becoming part of a new school community. Welcome back to all our returning families; it is has been great to catch up with you over the past week (and last night).

As I walk around the school, I am so impressed at how well the new students have settled in. We had a school tour yesterday (for potential new families), and visitors thought the year 1 students were year 2’s,
because they were working and playing so well and looked so happy — after only 2 full days and 2 half days at school! Well done to our teachers, parents and students for making the start of year process so smooth.

Over the school holidays our support staff worked hard in making physical improvements to the school. Congratulations to Philippa and the contractors who have transformed the interior of the school hall. A big thank you to the custodial staff who helped provide us with white board and chalk board surfaces in the covered playgrounds. The students are enjoying writing and drawing on them during play times.

During the holidays we received our official certificate from the Council of International Schools (CIS). We also had an International Primary Curriculum (IPC) representative lead us in staff training days. Full
accreditation usually requires a minimum of 5-year process from when a school first opens. However, CIS and IPC are so impressed with Island CA they think that we will be able to work for full IPC accreditation in only four years, so that we may be accredited by the end of this school year.

At the Parent Information Night last night, staff and I shared highlights for the previous year and looked forward to what we plan for this year. This year’s plans include: the senior class to camp on an Island in the Sai Kung region, Chinese Studies to expand to 3 pathways, an end of year Production / Con-cert, Literacy and Book Character Days, and our first swimming gala.

All the best for the year ahead!

Debbie Middleton, Principal
