Principal’s Message Vol.53 – Sept 2015
Dear Island CA Community, 您好.
Thank you to all those parents who attended the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Annual General Meeting today. It is so encouraging to have such a passionate hardworking group of parents who make significant contributions to the school. Thank you to the PTA executive committee for their great achievements over the last school year. We look forward to the year ahead with the newly elected PTA executive committee.
At the meeting today I shared the latest information we have regarding the climbing wall, retaining wall, roof top and middle school updates. I also shared some of the plans for this academic year. Further in the newsletter you will see the graphs with information from the finance team, regarding Island CA’s capital expenditure. We can celebrate the news from the Authorised Person (structural engineer) that the school roof top loading is strong enough for us to use the rooftop as a “leisure, recreational and amusement area”. This means, for example, that we can have seating, planters, areas for games such as 4 square and hopscotch, without having to do any extra work on the rooftop. With further work it would be possible to use it as a netball area, for instance. What is less likely, at least in the short term, is that we will be able to use it as a playground with permanent fixtures. In answer to parents’ questions, the architect’s presentation confirmed that it is definitely not possible to fix anything to the retaining wall. The architect also provided designs for fitting up to (the equivalent of) 6 extra classrooms on our current Bridges Street site. These could provide 21st century innovative, open, collaborative learning
The climbing wall plans are moving along. We are in the process of designing an International Mindedness mural on the climbing wall, so that students can for instance climb up the sky scrapers in Hong Kong, then the Great Wall of China, the Statue of Liberty, the Taj Mahal and the Sydney Opera House. Or they may choose to climb along the back of a whale and up the neck of a giraffe!
Following on from the Parent Information Night I realise that there is a degree of confusion among some parents over our middle school and secondary school plans, caused by the terminology in use. “Middle school” is an integral part of the secondary school system. Year 7 is the first year of secondary schooling in the British system; it is the first year of the middle and secondary school system in the U.S.A. Rest assured that we do have concrete plans for secondary school!
God bless you,
