Principal’s Message Vol.50 – June 2015

Dear Island CA Community, 您好.

It has been a fairly social week for many adults in our school community!

A big thank you to the Parent Teacher Association for organising a most enjoyable social evening; the wine and cheese, and the silent auction on 28th May were a huge success. We all had a great excuse to wear our finery in such a beautiful, classy setting. It made it all the better to hear that having a fun night out had helped raise over $70,000 (nett). This money will go directly to our students; it will fund extra play and ICT equipment to help put the ‘icing on the cake’ – providing over and above the resources they currently use. So thank you very much to all our parents and staff who made this possible – donors, organisers, buyers and consumers.

The next day we had the Helpers Appreciation afternoon tea and singalong. Many of our families’ domestic helpers came along and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The very next day I happened to meet Steve Chitty—the very person who established Helper Appreciation Month. He said “Helper Appreciation Month was established as an opportunity to think about how fortunate we are to have someone working in our home here in Hong Kong.” He said it was also “a good opportunity to take a fresh look at the person we employ and ponder the sacrifices they have made to be here and what they must miss at times.” At Island CA we expect our students to show the International Primary Curriculum personal goals, which include respect, cooperation and thoughtfulness; we encourage partnership between parents and the school to instil in our students a good attitude towards helpers and other people who have a different background from them and their family. Let’s not just have May as the month to appreciate helpers; let’s appreciate them all year round.

Next week we will have a representative visit us from the Council of International Schools . He will be spending a couple of days at our school talking to staff, students and parents, visiting classes and looking through documentation. Thank you in advance to the parents who will be giving up some of their time to meet with him.

God Bless you,

Debbie Middleton
